Gorgeous sr amstaff Zena in danger@Brooklyn kill shelter-abandoned
Type: Pets, For Sale

A volunteer writes: The first few times I walked Zena she didn't reveal much about herself except that she was very, very scared. Someone has cropped her ears so that they are flush with her head, she looks like she's been a mama, and one side of her mouth is always upturned into a crooked smile as if she's had a stroke. She seemed so nervous that she almost couldn't risk the vulnerability of relieving herself (and she seems very housetrained!) and did so only when she got spooked by a loud noise. She wouldn't take my treats, but let me pet her and was cooperative going in and out of her cage. Not feeling optimistic that she'd let down her guard anytime soon, I brought her to the yard one day in hopes that it would be less stressful for her. She relieved herself quickly, did a little sniffing around, and then, to my surprise, hopped right on the bench and looked at me. When I spoke to her softly she quickly wagged her tail, albeit between her legs. I sat down on the end of the bench and she kept moving closer to me, sitting up straight, and then inching even closer until we were side by side. She nuzzled into me and I almost expected her to purr as I pet her! At one point she weaseled her way behind my back, as if she was unsure and overwhelmed by her own bravery, but her willingness to trust won out - she put her paws on my lap and rested her head on my knee. When I put her back in her cage she wagged her tail (untucked this time!), propped her paws on her cage door, and licked my hand! Since then she greets me similarly - sometimes even wagging her tail in a circle. She loves treats and has even shown me glimpses of her playful side. Zena may be a little shy at first, but she warms up to be incredibly sweet! Please come see this little doll at Brooklyn ACC!
A shelter staff member writes: Zena was brought into BACC because her owner abandoned her at a friend's house. Zena was very shy when she was first brought into the shelter, but has since come out of her shell! She is still nervous around new people, but she has really warmed up to the ACOs and volunteers that have spent time with her. She sweetly wags her tail and will gently prop her paws up on you once she is comfortable! Zena will likely do best in a quiet and laid-back home with owners that will work with her to help her become more comfortable with new situations. Once she settles in, I'm sure she'll make a great snuggle buddy! Please help Zena find her forever family
