A volunteer writes: I wasn't planning on it, but this Valentine's day, I fell in love. It was the day Loken was surrendered to Brooklyn ACC. One look at him was like being endlessly hit with Cupid's arrows! He is well over 100 pounds and as handsome as they come. A note on his cage instructed employees to guide him to his food, but it wasn't totally clear why. His eyes looked clear, and though he averted them and wouldn't make eyes with me, he was also laying down by the wall and his legs were shaking--surely he was just scared! When I finally got to meet him, it became apparent that Loken is indeed blind and that the tremble to his legs isn't a manifestation of fear! He hugged the wall as we slowly made our way down the hallway. His gait is off and seems to be more than just the result of navigating unknown territory. Once outside, Loken relieved himself immediately, suggesting he has housetraining. He is very responsive to noises and does adorable head tilts as he figures out where they're coming from. He finds my voice and lets me pet him all over, even scratching along with his back leg when I hit a spot out of his reach. While it's hard to imagine now, in his former home Loken loved to chase tennis balls. He isn't quick to notice them, but he loves treats and takes them very politely. I don't think he noticed the other dogs passing us outside, but he previously lived with a female Maltese (what a pair!) and was reportedly very gentle and playful with her. I'm not sure if Loken's current physical condition is something that came on suddenly, or something that crept on with time, but there will be no "return to glory" for his boy..... he never left!! Loken is a magnificent, sweet, gentle giant--please help him find that special someone that can address his medical needs and love him forever!
